Ultraviolet Light
Ultraviolet light is
light that mostly emits from the sun. This form of light can be very
dangerous to humans, especially the eyes and skin. It is known that ultraviolet
light can cause serious skin
cancer that in many cases can be fatal. There is scientific evidence
that this form of light actually has concentrations of radiation
emitting from it which can alter DNA in humans and even animals.
There are some positive things about ultraviolet
light, however. The light has high concentrations of vitamin D, which
is something that most people do not get enough of in their daily diets
or lifestyles. Vitamin D has been known to help with
depression and encourage bone mass. A small amount of exposure to the
sun can help people get their needed
amounts of vitamin D. Because of the dangers of ultraviolet light, there
is now something called the UV
index, which serves as an indicator of the intensity of the sun on
each day.
While the threat of skin
cancer caused by harmful rays is a real threat, there are measures
that people can take to protect themselves. The most obvious and widely
used method is sunscreen. It is recommended that people use a minimum
of 15 SPF while out in the sun. There are many sunscreens that can go
as high as 60 or more, so use whatever you feel is necessary, and be
sure to cover the face, arms, back, and legs thoroughly before planning
on being in the sun for an extended period of time. Another safeguard
is a wide-brimmed hat. Hats can shade the face and eyes, and protect
them from harmful
UV rays. Of course, good UV
blocking sunglasses are always a plus as well. The eyes are very
sensitive to ultraviolet light, so be sure to protect them with good, quality
sunglasses.
